Baseball Team Sweeps Oswego

NEW PALTZ — Vinnie Perry and the rest of the SUNY New Paltz offense broke out in a big way, sweeping SUNYAC rival Oswego in the Hawks’ 2001 home-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Campbell Field.

New Paltz came from behind to win game one 13-7, and also prevailed in the nightcap, 6-1.

Perry went 3-for-5 in the opener, with a double, two home runs, four runs scored, and five runs batted in. He nearly had a third homer in the eighth, when his opposite-field shot hit high off the left field fence for a double.

Third baseman Brian Clarke finally was able to find some holes in the defense for his always hard-hit balls, going 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, with three doubles and three runs batted in. And New Paltz’s middle infield tandem of Paul Schropfer and Jeff Lackaye combined to go eight-for-13 at the plate, while providing solid defense (21 chances, no errors) in the field.

In the nightcap, sophomore Rich Bizelia allowed just three Oswego hits and an unearned run over seven innings to even his record at 2-2.

New Paltz will face Utica/Rome on Sunday for a noon doubleheader at Campbell Field.
