Merchant Marine Academy Upsets Hawks

KINGS POINT — The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy snapped SUNY New Paltz’s three-match men’s volleyball win streak, 24-30, 33-31, 19-30, 30-28, 15-12, on Thursday night at Edwin J. O’Hara Hall.

It marked only the third time that the (17-5) Hawks, ranked fifth nationally with the best record in Division III, have lost in their last 20 matches. With the win, the Mariners even their season record at 10-10.

But New Paltz was not without strong individual efforts. Sophomore setter Beau Warren (34 assists, 16 kills, 11 digs) had his third triple-double of the season, and senior outside hitter Otto Tannure had 21 kills, 11 digs and three service aces.

New Paltz will look to get back on the winning track on its spring break trip to Virginia next week. The Hawks take on Division I George Mason at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and play a 7 p.m. match at EIVA Odeneal Conference rival Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday.
