Baseball Splits Sunday Contests

FORT PIERCE, FLA. — The bats didn’t get going until game two on Sunday for the SUNY New Paltz baseball team, which defeated Western Connecticut State, 10-8, after losing to Buena Vista earlier in the day, 5-2.

New Paltz managed just four hits while stranding 10 runners on base against Buena Vista. Mark Milroy (two hits, including a triple), Vinnie Perry and Mike Bucco (one hit apiece) were the lone New Paltz players to be successful on offense. The lack of run support kept Hawk righthander Rich Bizelia.

It was more like as advertised for the Hawk offense against the Colonials. New Paltz had 10 hits and all 10 runs off Western Connecticut starter Greg Palanzo over the first five innings, and 12 hits for the contest. And Keith Roloson struck out two of the three batters he faced in the seventh to continue his comeback from several preseason injuries.

The Hawks are now 2-3 overall, and 1-2 on its Florida trip, with five games remaining. Jeff Bond will make his first start on the mound on Monday at 3 p.m. at the Lawnwood Complex against Palm Beach Atlantic.
