Multicultural Tree Lighting Ceremony Begins New Tradition

NEW PALTZ — Students and alumni at SUNY New Paltz will open the holiday season with a multicultural tree lighting ceremony Thursday, Dec. 7.

The ceremony, hosted by the Undergraduate Alumni Association and SUNY New Paltz Chapter of the Mid-Hudson Region, is designed to begin a new tradition recognizing the full range of faiths represented on the campus.

“Although we are a relatively small campus, we have wide and rich religious and cultural diversity,” said Azita Miller, acting director of alumni affairs. “Lighting a tree that will grace the main entrance to the university is a way to celebrate our diverse community.”

The event will begin with refreshments in the lobby of the Haggerty Administration Building at 5 p.m., followed by a candle lighting ceremony. At 6 p.m., the group will walk to the tree for the lighting.
