Field Hockey Gets First-Ever Win

KINGSTON — Kelly Anderson’s goal 8:43 into overtime gave SUNY New Paltz its first-ever field hockey victory, 4-3, over Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon at Kingston’s Dietz Stadium.

It capped a big day for Anderson, a 2000 Kingston High graduate, who finally got her first collegiate win on the field that she had won many times in high school. She assisted on two of New Paltz’s (1-10) other three goals, first on Allison Taub’s goal 10:55 into the contest, and again on Meredith Herfel’s score with 5:51 remaining in the first half.

Taub’s twin sister Lisa had the Hawks’ other goal at the 19:52 mark. Rondout Valley product Liz Clarke made five saves to record her first collegiate victory.

Nicole Varmon scored for Manhattanville (3-9) with 1:20 left in the first half to cut the Hawks’ halftime lead to 3-1. Then, Kristen Coffey scored at the 55:49 mark, and Elizabeth Chojnacki forced overtime with her goal with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

New Paltz will look to make it two in a row, when it plays at Union at 4 p.m. next Tuesday.
