NEW PALTZ — On Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. Sally Ann Drucker (Nassau Community College) will do a dramatic reading about the life and work of Emma Goldman.
Emma Goldman (1869-1940) was an anarchist agitator, public speaker and activist who was a pioneer advocate for birth control, passionate critic of capitalism and champion of free speech and women’s emancipation. Dressed in period garb, Drucker’s performance is entitled, Emma Goldman: Ragtime Rebel.
Editor of the anarchist journal Mother Earth, she expounded on a wide variety of social, artistic and political topics and acquired the epithet “Red Emma.” She was deported from the U.S. in 1919 and spent two years in Russia where she was bitterly disappointed by the Bolshevik suppression of dissent. She spent most of the rest of her life in St. Tropez, France, but died in Canada while she was on a fund raising tour.
This event will take place in the Lecture Center, room 108 on the SUNY New Paltz campus. It is co-sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program and the Hudson Valley Humanists with funding from the NYS Council for the Humanities.
