Field Hockey Team Drops First-Ever Match
UNION, NJ — Freshman forward Kelly Anderson scored the first goal in school history, but the Hawks fell in their first-ever varsity field hockey match, 8-1, to Kean University on Saturday afternoon.
Anderson, the 1999 Mid-Hudson Athletic League Field Hockey Player of the Year and a member of the Kingston High team that reached last year’s New York State semifinals, scored the Hawks’ first-ever goal with 16:21 left in the second half on a pass from sophomore midfielder Jodi Novatka.
Vicki Hassler and Azuree Schnur scored three goals apiece to lead the (1-0) Cougars to the victory. Former Rondout Valley High standout goalkeeper Liz Clarke made 16 saves in the loss for (0-1) New Paltz.
The Hawks travel to Vassar College on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match. The game had been scheduled to be New Paltz’s first-ever home game, but was changed to a road contest due to the still unfinished artificial turf replacement at Kingston’s Dietz Stadium.
