Hawks Get Win In Bonilla’s Last Match

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA. — SUNY New Paltz beat East Stroudsburg, 15-10, 15-10, 15-1, in its season finale to send retiring Head Coach Tony Bonilla off on a winning note.

Freshman Miguel Soriano led the Hawk offense with 13 kills, while Christopher Wright (eight kills, seven blocks), Otto Tannure (nine kills, nine digs, one service ace) and Robert Manosca (31 assists) also contributed.

New Paltz finishes the season 10-15 (2-10 EIVA Hay Conference), while East Stroudsburg falls to 4-13 (4-8 EIVA Hay).

Bonilla, a 1987 New Paltz graduate and former men’s volleyball star for the Hawks, has decided to step down after 12 seasons coaching the men and eight years leading the women. He compiled a 190-153 (.554 winning percentage) mark with the men and an even more impressive 201-114 (.638) record with the women.

The New Paltz women had seven straight winning seasons under Bonilla’s leadership, and appeared in the last seven New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Tournaments and the last six SUNYAC Tournaments. He shared SUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Co-Coach of the Year honors with Cortland’s Joan Sitterly in 1998, after guiding the women to a school-record 31 wins.
