New Paltz Sweeps Men’s Volleyball Doubleheader

NEW PALTZ — SUNY New Paltz gave D’Youville College just its third loss of the season, and also defeated the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to highlight a men’s volleyball tri-match on Saturday at Elting Gymansium.

The (7-10) Hawks, ranked 10th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 15 Poll, beat 15th-ranked M.I.T. (6-14) in the day’s first match, 15-10, 15-11, 15-6. Then, after D’Youville edged the Engineers in five games, 15-10, 15-6, 14-16, 13-15, 15-10, the Hawks returned to the court for a four-game victory, 15-8, 15-3, 13-15, 15-4, over the fourth-ranked nationally (15-3) Spartans.

Miguel Soriano (19 kills, five blocks, five digs, four aces), Christopher Wright (17 kills, nine blocks) and Otto Tannure (13 kills) helped lead New Paltz against D’Youville. Soriano (12 kills, five blocks, five digs) and Wright (12 kills, eight blocks) also led the way for the Hawks in the M.I.T. match, with Sean Riley (six kills, five blocks, two digs) and Matt Roy (36 assists, eight digs) also contributing.

New Paltz is back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at home against third-ranked New York University.
