Hawks Lose Women’s Lacrosse Opener

KINGSTON — Vassar College scored nine first half goals en route to a 16-1 win over SUNY New Paltz in a women’s lacrosse match at Kingston’s Dietz Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Heather Axford had three goals and an assist for the (2-3) Brewers, which spoiled New Paltz’s season opener. Sophomore Jennifer Freud had the Hawks’ lone goal with 11:01 remaining in the second half on an assist from freshman Jacqueline Bunzel.

The Brewers outshot New Paltz, 40-6 in the contest. Hawk sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Grasso recorded 15 saves in the loss, while Vassar’s Bridget Milot, also a sophomore, made four saves.

New Paltz returns to Dietz on Friday for its 4 p.m. SUNYAC opener against Potsdam, and then travels to Wells College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
