Women’s Volleyball Gets 20th Win

NEW PALTZ — SUNY New Paltz tuned up for this weekend’s SUNYAC East competition with a 15-8, 15-8, 15-10 sweep of visiting Manhattanville College on Thursday night at Elting Gymnasium.

Mercia Miranda led a balanced Hawk effort with 12 kills, 12 digs and two aces. Ellen Salov added four digs, three aces and two kills, and German exchange student Nicole Ginzel had 10 assists, as New Paltz (20-11) won its second straight match. Manhattanville falls to 11-10 with the loss.

The Hawks are at the aforementioned SUNYAC East Pool Play at Potsdam tomorrow and Saturday. After compiling a 4-1 record at the first Pool Play event at Utica/Rome, New Paltz is in second place behind unbeaten Cortland (5-0). The top two teams in each of the Eastern and Western Divisions at the end of this second of two Pool Play events will qualify for the 1999 SUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament, which will be hosted by the East’s top team on Oct. 29-30.
