Men’s Soccer Team Ties College Of New Jersey

NEW PALTZ — An own goal spoiled SUNY New Paltz’s men’s soccer home opener on Wednesday at rainy Alumni Field against The College of New Jersey. New Paltz tied the Lions, 1-1, in double overtime.

The (0-4-1) Hawks got on the scoreboard early, with freshman Tim Van Wyen scoring New Paltz’s first goal of the season at 6:16.

But a defensive pass back to Hawk goalkeeper Kevin Smith found its way into the goal just 16 seconds before halftime, to knot the game at 1-1, where it remained.

For the game, the (2-1-2) Lions led New Paltz on shots (14-7) and corner kicks (7-5), but the Hawks missed several good scoring chances, with Ryan Hayward needing just one save for The College of New Jersey. Counterpart Smith, meanwhile, made six saves for New Paltz, which opens its SUNYAC season at 4 p.m. on Friday at Plattsburgh.
