NEW PALTZ — Margaret Gilbert, a professor of philosophy at the University of Connecticut (Storrs), will speak on “Considerations on Collective Guilt,” at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Thursday, October 8.
Gilbert is the author of Living Together: Rationality, Sociality, and Obligation(1996, Rowman and Littlefield) and On Social Facts (1989, Princeton University Press). She has held visiting positions at many universities including, most recently, King’s College (London) and Princeton University. Her more recent research has focused on issues at the intersection of philosophical social theory and political philosophy.
Gilbert states that many philosophers and others have expressed doubts about the possibility of collective guilt or moral responsibility, that only individual members of a group can act and be morally responsible. Her talk, which will explore a different view, will make a case for the possibility of collective moral responsibility.
Gilbert’s public lecture, which is sponsored by the Philosophy Club, will be held at 5 p.m. in the Jacobson Faculty Tower, Room 1010.
