NEW PALTZ — The New York Geographic Alliance’s 10th Annual Summer Institute will be held at the State University of New York at New Paltz from July 12-24. The New York Geographic Alliance (NYGA) is part of a national network of state geographic alliances sponsored by the National Geographic Society’s Geographic Education Program and the New York State Education Department.
The NYGA’s Summer Institute will provide an opportunity for teachers across grade and content levels to gain extensive training in geographic content, classroom applications and techniques for effective presentation to their colleagues.
Jo Margaret Mano, a faculty member in the geography department at SUNY New Paltz and resident geographer and coordinator for the Institute, noted that the goal of the Institute is “to promote and improve geographic education in primary and secondary schools throughout the state.”
Participants are selected from a statewide competition. During the program, the kindergarten through twelfth grade teachers will live and work on the SUNY campus, attending a variety of lectures and workshops presented by university professors and teacher consultants.
