GE Board Update
The fall forum, hosted by the General Education (GE) Board, was a success. Discussions with the faculty in attendance informed the development of proposals for reforming assessment on campus. The GE Board recently submitted to the faculty two proposed plans. While the GE Board recommends adopting a model that would involve capstone-level, student-focused assessment, it also provided an alternative. The GE Board hopes the two models will allow the faculty to fully consider a range of options for developing a new and improved assessment process on campus. The plan was introduced in the Academic Senate in the March 6th meeting. The GE Board hosted two informational sessions for anyone who had questions about the draft plans on March 13th and March 14th. The Academic Senate will vote on the proposals at a future date.
Meanwhile, the university is prepared for the switch to the new GE 4 beginning with students admitted in the fall. The GE Board is working to consolidate and polish campus communications about General Education. The GE Board continues its work to help faculty chosen for the spring GE assessments. Finally, the GE Board is exploring ways to fund the development of first-year seminars, student portfolio software for assessment purposes, and GE course needs.
