Hawks Hold On For Exciting Win
NEW PALTZ — Dave Ott’s free throw with 2/10ths of a second left in regulation lifted New Paltz to an exciting 59-58 win over Oneonta in its home opener on Tuesday night at Elting Gymnasium.
Ott made the front end of two-shot foul, and then intentionally bounced the second free throw off the rim to allow time to expire.
New Paltz had led by as many as 14 points – and never trailed in the contest – before the Red Dragons’ Shaun Bauer tied the score at 58 with two made free throws with eight seconds remaining. Bauer then committed the foul on an otherwise certain layup that sent Ott to the foul line.
The (2-4 overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) Hawks held a six-point halftime advantage, but were outscored 34-29 over the final 20 minutes, including allowing a 10-2 Oneonta run over the final 2:45.
Ott and Ben Davey headlined a balanced Hawk offense with eight points apiece, while six others scored at least four points each. Meanwhile, Bauer led Oneonta (2-4 overall, 1-3 SUNYAC) with 12 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocks.
New Paltz will look to make it two straight when it hosts Fredonia at 8 p.m. on Friday.
