SUNY New Paltz student receives $10,000 scholarship from New York Women in Communications Foundation
NEW PALTZ – Miriam Ward (‘15), a freshman at the State University of New York at New Paltz, is one of ten recipients of a 2012 scholarship awarded by the New York Women in Communications Foundation. Ward, from Rye, N.Y., who is double majoring in digital media production and history, received the $10,000 Meredith Corporation scholarship. Meredith is a media and marketing company serving American women. Its national brands include Better Homes and Gardens, Parents, Family Circle, Ladies’ Home Journal, Fitness, More, American Baby, and Every Day with Rachael Ray. The company creates content in the consumer interest areas of home, family, health and wellness and self-development.
Ward, who is also a 2011 Foundation scholarship recipient, was one of two students selected for the honor from the State University of New York system. “I am so grateful and honored to be awarded a 2012 New York Women in Communications scholarship from the Meredith Corporation,” said Ward. “New York Women in Communications has given me the support, guidance and tools I need to achieve my dreams. This award is not just a scholarship; it’s the gift of empowerment and inspiration of these amazing women in communications who I admire and respect so much. I am beyond thankful and extremely excited to intern at the Meredith Corporation this summer,” she added.
The Meredith Corporation scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career in publishing. It includes a summer internship for college credit in the corporation’s communications department focusing on corporate social responsibility programs. The recipient must be majoring or pursuing an advanced degree in a communications-related field at an accredited college or university in the U.S.; have an overall grade point average of 3.2 or better; and reside in N.Y., N.J., Conn. or Pa.
The New York Women in Communications Foundation is the largest foundation for communications scholarships for women in the tri-state area. Scholarships are awarded annually based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community-service activities, honors and other awards or recognition, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations.
Ward and the other scholarship recipients were honored at the New York Women in Communications Inc., annual Matrix Awards event held on April 23 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
