SUNY New Paltz to offer Advanced Certificate Program in Teaching English Language Learners

NEW PALTZ – The Department of Secondary Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz is offering an advanced certificate program in Teaching English Language Learners (TELL). Full-time faculty in the School of Education will teach this new, two-track program. Track 1, which includes five courses, is designed to help K-12 teachers work more effectively with English language learners in their classrooms. Track 2, which includes six courses, plus a practicum, is designed to give college graduates in all fields a solid preparation for teaching English abroad. The Track 2 hands-on practicum is done in conjunction with the Ulster Literacy Association. Either track can be completed in two semesters.

The TELL certificate program does not lead to New York State certification in teaching. However, program graduates can apply nine credit hours of coursework to a range of certification programs.

Students must apply to the New Paltz Graduate School by June 21 in order to be eligible to take courses in the fall 2012 semester. For more information about the TELL Advanced Certificate Program, contact Professor Sue Books, the TELL program coordinator at 845-257-2879 or by email at bookss@newpaltz.edu.
