Department of Mathematics Chair Hyunchul Park receives American Mathematical Society grant to support ongoing research
Associate Professor of Mathematics Hyunchul Park is a recipient of the 2025 American Mathematical Society-Simons Research Enhancement Grant for Primarily Undergraduate Institution Faculty.
This highly competitive national award, jointly funded by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Simons Foundation, provides $3,000 per year for three years to support travel to conferences and research meetings, along with an additional $300 per year towards the Department and another $300 per year covering University overhead costs.
Park will use these funds to support an international, collaborative study with three faculty members at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, Fordham University and Michigan State University, respectively.
Together, they are exploring one of the most pressing topics in probability theory: spectral heat content in Lévy processes. Moreover, they are looking to understand how the shape of a space affects how much heat it can hold and how quickly that heat is lost, with a goal of figuring out which shapes are best at retaining heat.
Park is the third Department of Mathematics faculty member to be awarded this grant, following Assistant Professor Jaiung Jun and Associate Professor Anca Radulescu, who were recipients during its inaugural year in 2023. The honor adds another chapter to the department’s growing reputation for significant research, active engagement in the mathematics community and success in securing external funding.
