SUNY New Paltz international students reflect on their first-ever Thanksgiving in the United States
Dozens of international students took part in a campus tradition on Nov. 22, where the Center for International Programs hosted its annual Thanksgiving celebration, welcoming students from countries across all seven continents in the traditions of the quintessentially American holiday.
The festivities kicked off with remarks from Associate Provost Laurel M. Garrick-Duhaney, who herself was an international student and shared how her first Thanksgiving showed her the true meaning of the holiday.
“It is a time of year when we pause to reflect on the blessings we’ve received,” she said. “Getting to sit with different kinds of people over a meal while reflecting on what we’re grateful for has always been something special to value about Thanksgiving.”
As students indulged in deliciously prepared Thanksgiving staples, from mashed potatoes to apple pie to the beloved main course of turkey, the true meaning of Thanksgiving was resonant, with students sharing what they’re thankful for this year.
“I’m thankful for the opportunities that have been presented upon me, and for the social support system that I have.” – Sonakshi Bansal ‘25g (Psychological Science) from New Delhi, India
“I’m thankful for friendly classmates and great classes.” – Tai Anh Le, a non-matriculated student from Ba Ria, Vietnam.
The celebration served as a close to International Education Week, a series of programming dedicated to celebrating the benefits of international education, both here and abroad.
