SUNY NEW PALTZ PROFESSOR HONORED BY GERMAN PRESIDENT

NEW PALTZ — German President Roman Herzog will award Peter D.G. Brown, a faculty member at the State University of New York at New Paltz, the Order of Merit of the German Federal Republic (Bundesverdienstkreuz), the highest honor that the country can bestow upon a non-German national. Brown, a professor of German, is a member of the department of foreign languages at the college.

Brown has edited more than 100 books in three scholarly series that he founded: Studies in Modern German Literature, Studies in German Jewish History, and Women in German Literature. He has taught at SUNY New Paltz since 1971. For the past 25 years, he has directed the college’s SUNY summer program in Germany. In 1993 he received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Brown will receive the award at a ceremony hosted by the German Consul General, in New York City, on May 3.
