Associate Professor of Business Vivian Wen building online library on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)

Associate Professor of Business Vivian Wen is leveraging her expertise to create a free, online resource called the ESG Holist,  a large and growing library of original articles, focused on the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) movement for business leaders, investors and everyday citizens.

ESG is a framework used to evaluate the sustainability and ethical impact of a company or investment on the natural environment, society, and its leadership practices.

With its power to influence capital allocation, the financial sector can contribute significantly to creating a more sustainable and resilient business environment by supporting projects that create social equity and do no harm in the environment,” said Wen.

While the practice of ESG investing has been around since the 1960s, companies and investors started to embrace the movement in response to the socioeconomic and sociocultural challenges experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As more corporations and businesses work to incorporate ESG practices, Wen updates her website regularly with articles on current trends in ESG, how business owners can navigate challenges in implementing the framework, and what investors should prioritize when looking into companies working to emphasize ESG principles.

The challenges posed by the crisis alerted me to the urgency of integrating ESG considerations into business decision-making and adopting a holistic approach that encompasses all aspects of ESG,” said Wen. “I began delving deeper into the ESG landscape, aiming to enhance my research by integrating multidisciplinary studies and sharing my findings with others.”

The website expands upon Wen’s scholarship in corporate finance since joining the School of Business faculty in 2012. Her scholarship has been published in academic business journals and presented at events for various business education associations.
