Black History Month 2023 at New Paltz: Events for students, faculty and staff

All across campus, academic departments and other units are organizing events and programs to help our community learn, reflect and engage in dialogue on a variety of topics related to Black History Month.

A partial list of these events and programs can be found below:

Feb. 7: Marital Selection x Black Immigrants in the USA: A Panel Discussion  | 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Speakers: Vadricka Etienne of the University of Nevada, Reno and Karen Okigbo of the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy Co-sponsors: Center for Student Engagement, Eddy at New Paltz, Black Studies Department and Black Lives Matter @ School collective

Feb. 8 & 9: Film Screening and Discussion of Award-Winning Documentary “Free Renty: Lanier v. Harvard (2021) | 7 p.m. Film screening and faculty-led discussion on Feb. 8 and presentation with documentary subject Tamara Lanier on Feb. 9. Facilitator: Keely Heuer, Chair of the Art History Department Co-sponsors: Departments of Art History and Black Studies, with the support of Campus Auxiliary Services

Feb. 21: The Beauty of White Supremacy | 6:30 p.m. Speaker: Scholar-activist Yaba Blay, Ph.D. Facilitator: Weldon McWilliams, Chair of the Black Studies Department. Co-sponsors: Black Studies Department, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Offices of the Provost & President and Black Lives Matter @ School collective

Feb. 22: (Re) Shaping, (Re) Shifting & (Re) Imagining Our Work Through Racial Literacy | 6 p.m. Speaker: Yolanda Sealy-Ruiz of Columbia University’s Teacher’s College. Facilitator: Devon Duhaney, Associate Professor of Latin American and Carribean Studies Co-sponsors: Department of Black Studies, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council, School of Education and Black Lives Matter @ School collective
