International Education Week report: New Paltz is a SUNY leader in international students on campus

SUNY New Paltz had more inbound international students enrolled on campus in fall 2021 than any other SUNY comprehensive college, according to a new batch of data published by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the U.S. Departments of State and Education.

Those international students contributed more than $7.5 million to the regional economy, according to the IIE’s analysis.

The statistics were released to coincide with the beginning of International Education Week, which runs from Nov. 14-18 this year and celebrates the many benefits of global learning and exchange.

“These reports are truly worth celebrating, as they help demonstrate the meaningful contributions that international students make in our campus community and beyond,” said Beth Vargas, executive director of the Center for International Programs. “Learning alongside someone from a different country and culture can be a transformative experience, building cultural competence and a greater appreciation for diversity, sustainability, and internationalization. Global learning imparts skills needed to work across differences to forge mutual understanding and find solutions to global challenges together.”

The IIE also indicated that study abroad and educational exchange – both into and outbound from the United States – are beginning to rebound following the COVID-19 era of travel bans and restrictions.

A new “Open Doors” report states that the number of international students attending U.S. colleges and universities rose in the 2021-22 academic year, and preliminary signs suggest that trend has continued in fall 2022.

Study Abroad at SUNY New Paltz is similarly revitalized this year. Our partnerships with overseas institutions began reopening in spring 2022, and New Paltz students are participating in 17 different programs this fall, with that number expected to grow in spring 2023.
