PLATTSBURGH, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team traveled to Plattsburgh this afternoon for a SUNYAC double-header and split 1-1 with the Cardinals.
In the first game the Hawks fell 6-5 in ten innings. New Paltz took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Alex Cadmus hit a two run single through the left side. Plattsburgh tallied a run in the bottom of the inning and tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth, before taking a 4-2 lead in the sixth. In the seventh inning, Cadmus doubled to left center and scored on a single by Tyler Terlecky.
The Hawks scored two runs in the eighth inning for the 5-4 lead. John DeKams hit an RBI single, and Justin Buonamno was walked with bases loaded for the second run of the inning. The Cardinals evened the ball game with a run in the bottom of the inning and forced the extra inning with zero runs in the ninth. Plattsburgh scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Cadmus went three for four from the plate with three RBI and DeKames went two for five. Zachary Potter pitched seven innings and allowed six hits, four runs, four walks and struck out seven. Tristen Adams pitched two innings, allowing two hits, and one run. Michael Virga took the loss on the mound striking out two and allowing the final run.
In the second game of the double-header, the Hawks claimed a 1-0 victory. New Paltz tallied the lone run in the sixth inning. Jesse Marsh walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. DeKams singled to center field to score Marsh.
Jim Donohue went the distance on the mound, allowing one hit and striking out four. Marsh and DeKams each had two hits for New Paltz.
The Hawks return to action Sunday afternoon when they host SUNYIT in a SUNYAC double-header.
