STUDENTS PUBLISH NEWSLETTER FOR HEALTH DEPARTMENT
NEW PALTZ — Twenty-four students at the State University of New York at New Paltz recently produced a 12-page newsletter for the Dutchess County Health Department. The students involved in the project were all journalism majors, enrolled in a Copy Editing course taught by Howard Good, a faculty member in the department of communication and media.
The newsletter they produced, titled Healthy Start, highlights child health programs of the county’s Health Department. The issue focuses on topics related to immunization and was distributed to health-care providers throughout the region, to state health officials, and to other county health departments throughout the state. Among the articles, were those on underimmunized children, Poughkeepsie’ s Community Immunization Clinic, the new vaccine for chickenpox, an update on the polio vaccine, and fighting hepatitis B.
Students were involved in every aspect of the newsletter, according to Good. They conducted the interviews, wrote and edited the articles and designed the layout of the publication. Judy Herron, who served as managing editor of Healthy Start, instructed the students on how to use the computer software to develop the layout.
Printing costs for Healthy Start were paid for by the Dutchess County Health Department.
