More flexibility for students: College expands S/U grade option for fall 2020 and spring 2021

The following message was sent to students by email on Friday, Nov. 6, and was updated on Nov. 11.

Dear New Paltz Undergraduate Students:

We have heard student concerns expressed in the recent open letter and town hall and are taking action to add flexibility to grading options.

For fall 2020 and spring 2021, we are expanding the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) grade option.

This temporary expansion allows undergraduate students two more S/U grades to use in addition to the S/U grades undergraduate students already have for use under the regular policy.

While not the same as an unlimited Pass/Fail (P/F) option, the S/U expansion will provide significant relief that many students need under our current circumstances. The S/U expansion option has the support of faculty governance as well as academic/campus administration.

UPDATE: The new S/U application is now available and can be found by going to my.newpaltz.edu > Registration > S/U option.

The new deadline to elect the S/U option is moved to Dec. 1, 2020.

Wishing you a successful conclusion to the fall semester,

Barbara Lyman, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
David Eaton, Vice President for Enrollment Management
