SUNY New Paltz Baseball Swept By Blue Devils in Doubleheader

FREDONIA, NY — The Hawks tied the second game of today’s doubleheader against Fredonia with three runs in the seventh, but the Blue Devils scored a run in the bottom of the inning to steal the 8-7 victory. Fredonia took the opener by a final of 12-5.

With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, SUNY New Paltz (13-13, 1-5) manufactured three runs to tie the affair 7-7. Fredonia (5-12, 2-2), however, loaded the bases in their half of the seventh, scoring the game-winning run on a single from freshman outfielder Pete Lusk (Albion, NY). The Hawks rallied from a 5-1, third inning deficit to tie the contest in the seventh. Freshman second baseman Tyler Antrim (East Haddam, CT) and sophomore catcher Robert Helf (Peconic, NY) led SUNY New Paltz with two hits apiece. Six Hawks recorded a RBI in the game, junior utility George Perry (Port Jervis, NY) knocked in the game-tying run for the Hawks with a fielder’s choice in the seventh. senior outfielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) collected his second triple of 2006.

Freshman pitcher Tristan Greene (East Hampton, NY) picked up the loss for SUNY New Paltz, allowing three runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out one in three and two thirds innings of relief work. Senior pitcher Joe Gugliotta (Bayport, NY) got the start for the Hawks. Sophomore pitcher Matt Bauman (Alden, NY) earned his first win of 2006 for Fredonia.

SUNY New Paltz grabbed a first inning lead, in the opener, scoring three times in the top of the inning. Senior first baseman Dean Glanzman (Commack, NY) walked with the bases loaded to put the Hawks on the board. Sophomore third baseman Javier Lopez (Selden, NY) followed with a two-run single to give SUNY New Paltz the early advantage. The Blue Devils, however, responded with two runs in the first and three in the third to post a 5-3 lead after three. SUNY New Paltz threatened with two runs in the fourth to tie the contest, but Fredonia plated five runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead, 10-5.

Freshman shortstop Daniel Garcia (Patterson, NY) went 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Hawks. Cote’, Kelts and junior designated hitter John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) each recorded a hit for SUNY New Paltz. Sophomore pitcher Jeff Stith (Selden, NY) picked up the loss for the Hawks, as sophomore pitcher Noah Huard (Buffalo, NY) picked up his first win of the season in a relief appearance for the Blue Devils. Huard worked five innings of scoreless baseball. He walked two and struck out 11.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will play conference rival, Brockport, tomorrow, Sunday, April 9, in a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
