Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet with Pianist Findlay Cockrell to Perform at SUNY New Paltz

NEW PALTZ — A musical collaboration between faculty members of SUNY New Paltz and The University at Albany will generate concerts at each institution when the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet and pianist R. Findlay Cockrell share the stage for concerts on Tuesday, October 24 at SUNY New Paltz and on October 25 at The University at Albany.

Works on the programs include Mozart’s “Piano Concerto in Eb Major,” K. 449, arranged for string quartet by the composer, and Antonin Dvorák’s “Piano Quintet in A Major.” The New Paltz performance begins at 8:00 PM in McKenna Theatre. The Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet comprises four principal players of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic: violinists Carole Cowan and Emily Faxon; violist Valentina Charlap-Evans; and cellist Susan Seligman. Over the past decade, the Quartet has come to be recognized as the Hudson Valley’s premier chamber music ensemble. In October of 1994, the Department of Music at SUNY New Paltz announced the appointment of the HVP String Quartet as its Quartet-in-Residence. The Quartet is also the nucleus of the Poné Ensemble for New Music.

A recipient of many distinctions and awards, R. Findlay Cockrell is an Associate Professor of Music and a Collins Fellow at the University at Albany where he has been on the faculty since 1966. Cockrell was a scholarship student at Harvard College and the Juilliard School of Music where he received Bachelor and Master’s degrees in piano and was a student of the late Edward Steuermann. He performed his New York debut in 1965 under the sponsorship of Concert Artists Guild and Town Hall.

The concert will also be performed at SUNY Albany. Tickets to the SUNY New Paltz concert are available at the door, one-hour prior to the 8pm recital in McKenna Theatre. They are $5 general admission, $4 seniors and SUNY New Paltz faculty/staff, and $3 students. For information or directions to the theatre call 845-257-3872.
