U.S. News & World Report: SUNY New Paltz remains one of Northeast’s best universities
The U.S. News & World Report has once again placed SUNY New Paltz in the top tier of universities in the North region, with the College earning the No. 10 position among public universities and No. 41 among all universities in the publication’s 2019 rankings.
In addition to rating New Paltz highly on overall lists, U.S. News & World Report included the College on its Best Undergraduate Business Programs list for the first time ever, affirming the rising reputation and successful student outcomes of the internationally acclaimed, AACSB-accredited School of Business.
The College also earned inclusion on the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs list for the second consecutive year, rising into the top 150 nationwide on the heels of the recent ABET accreditation of the new Mechanical Engineering program.
SUNY New Paltz also appears on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Value Schools and Best Colleges for Veterans lists.
“We are pleased to see SUNY New Paltz continue to earn industry recognition in the latest edition of the U.S. News & World Report rankings,” said L. David Eaton, vice president for enrollment management. “What stands out is just how many aspects of our students’ experience are represented here, from the strength of individual programs to the high value of a New Paltz education relative to cost. It’s a validation of our efforts to prepare our increasingly diverse student population for successful lives and careers in a broad variety of rapidly changing fields.”
Rankings breakdown
SUNY New Paltz was listed at No. 10 on the list of Top Public Schools in the North region, and No. 41 on this year’s Best Regional Universities North Rankings list. These rankings evaluate institutions that offer a full range of undergraduate degree programs and many master’s degree options. New Paltz trailed only Geneseo among SUNY comprehensive colleges on these lists.
The College came in at No. 60 on the North regional list of Best Value Schools, which compares colleges’ and universities’ overall academic quality to their costs of tuition. A separate measure of students’ average debt at graduation recorded that members of the SUNY New Paltz Class of 2017 owed $26,385 on average, one of the 20 lowest figures on the U.S. News North Regional Universities list.
New Paltz rose to No. 22 in the North region on the Best Colleges for Veterans list, driven in large part by sustained efforts to recruit more military-affiliated students (enrollment has risen from 76 such students in 2014 to roughly 400 today), and support them during their time here with academic mentorship, assistance applying for financial benefits, social events and a sense of community.
“To see a number of our schools represented in the U.S. News & World Report college rankings is a source of pride for SUNY, as it shows that our system is a leader in higher education and that our students receive a high quality education at our colleges,” said SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson. “Through educational and research opportunities, extracurricular activities, and hands on learning experiences, every campus within our system provides our 1.4 million students with the experiences and skills they need to thrive.”
These rankings are published online and in the U.S. News & World Report guidebook, one of the most widely used resources for prospective students weighing options in higher education.
