Internationally renowned climate scientist Henry Pollack is spring ’18 Distinguished Speaker
SUNY New Paltz will welcome University of Michigan Professor Emeritus Henry Pollack to campus on Thursday, April 5, to deliver a Distinguished Speaker Series address titled “Confronting Climate Change: What Are the Challenges?”
Pollack is widely recognized as one of the top climate and geophysical scientists in the world, noted for his rare skill for communicating complicated scientific truths in a way that engages and inspires non-scientist audiences.
He has conducted research on all seven continents, including a number of excursions to Antarctica, and was a Contributing Author to the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2007 Assessment Report.
Pollack is also the author of “A World Without Ice” (Penguin, 2009), which offers insights into why ice matters, how ice has shaped the world we live in, and what its rapid disappearance could mean for our future. The book includes a foreword written by former Vice President Al Gore.
Pollack comes to New Paltz with a timely discussion of our climate’s uncertain future, at a moment in planetary history when the scientific consensus about humanity’s role in contemporary climate change has been met with mixed responses from local and national governments, the private sector and the international community.
Pollack’s address will take place on Thursday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Lecture Center 100 on the SUNY New Paltz campus.
Tickets for this event are $10. There is no charge for current SUNY New Paltz students who present ID, though there is a limited quantity of free tickets for students.
