College mourns passing of John Frank, longtime professor of art
It is with sadness that the College shares the news of the passing of John Frank, 88, of Stone Ridge, N.Y., on March 5, 2018.
Frank was an associate professor at SUNY New Paltz who taught art studio from 1965 – 1991.
A Times Herald-Record obituary reports extensively on Frank’s rich and influential career as a visual artist. He is associated with the abstract expressionist movement that thrived in New York and New England during the latter half of the 20th century.
In his work and his teaching, Frank demonstrated an interest in South Asian art and history. He received a Fulbright Grant in 1964 to study and paint in India and returned there many times during his life. He went on to found and oversee the India-UNESCO Associated Schools.
He exhibited internationally and at major galleries in the U.S. and was the director of the Provincetown, Mass., Art Association and Museum School.
He is survived by his wife, artist Kathi Robinson Frank; his two daughters, Natia Frank and Heather Frank Johnson; his son, Robert L. Frank; his step-daughter, Jennifer Tinker; his step-son, Benjamin Tinker, as well as three grandchildren.
