Business students represent New Paltz at NGA Case Competition
A team of four SUNY New Paltz business students attended the 2018 National Grocers Association Show in Las Vegas, Nev., where they represented the College in a national case competition and went head-to-head against some of the top collegiate marketing programs in the world.
New Paltz students Elizabeth Muzyka ’18 (Marketing), Anthony Walsh ’18 (Accounting), Anh Vu ’18 (Marketing) and Rathan Yogi ’18 (General Business, Management) attended the industry conference, which took place from Feb. 11-14, 2018.
The NGA Student Case Study Competition challenges participants to improve health and inspire wellness for both company associates and shoppers at a national chain.
Each team was tasked with developing a strategy to encourage and incentivize well-being among employees and shoppers alike, with a goal of lowering costs and improve the health of the community.
“Although the other schools pulled ahead in the end, I was impressed by our students’ ability to compete on this national stage,” said Russell Zwanka, lecturer of Food Marketing. “They handled this competition with the poise and confidence that comes from the knowledge they belong on the same stage with some of the top Food Marketing universities in the world. I could not be prouder of Liz, Anh, Anthony, and Rathan.”
In addition to participating in the competition, the students had opportunities to meet with food industry mentors and participate in business workshops, panels and keynotes.
“Attending the 2018 National Grocers Association Show allowed me to build connections with industry professionals, as well as students from other colleges,” Muzyka said. “Being able to participate in workshops and networking events at the conference showed me how far my education in the food industry has come. I was able to have meaningful, in depth conversations about some of the industry’s most prevalent topics with other professionals. Participating in this conference has expanded my knowledge and passion for this industry far beyond the classroom.”
