“Without Limits” Speaker Series presents keynote on food security
The 2016-17 edition of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences’ “Without Limits: Interdisciplinary Conversations in the Liberal Arts” speaker series concludes with a keynote address by food systems consultant Kate Clancy, visiting scholar at the Center for a Livable Future at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health
Clancy’s talk, titled, “A Systems Exploration of Food Security in the Northeast,” will take place on Thursday, April 27, from 4-6 p.m. in Lecture Center 104. A reception will follow in the LC Lobby.
In addition to her work at Johns Hopkins, Clancy is a senior fellow in the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture at the University of Minnesota and an adjunct professor at Tufts University.
She earned her doctorate in nutrition at the University of California, Berkeley, and has worked to research and promote sustainable diets and lifestyles since 1983.
The “Without Limits” Speaker Series, created and sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences, aims to draw connections between diverse applications of the liberal arts, while inviting campus and community partners to investigate the meaning and role of liberal education in the twenty-first century.
The program is built around a single theme each year; Clancy’s talk rounds out a 2016-17 series focused on the topic of food. A fall panel featured three LA&S alumnae who discussed their work in food-related careers. This spring, a panel of LA&S faculty members Kenneth Nystrom (Anthropology), Vicki Tromanhauser (English) and Vanessa Plumly (German) discussed how their research intersects with food-related topics, and in early April, Brian Bogart, an External Relations Advisor on Governance and Sustainable Development in the United Nations World Food Programme’s New York office, gave a talk entitled “Getting to Zero Hunger Globally by 2030 – the Role of the UN World Food Programme.”
“A Systems Exploration of Food Security in the Northeast” is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Campus Auxiliary Services.
