SUNY New Paltz Cross Country Teams Compete at Geneseo Invitational
GENESEO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Geneseo Invitational at Letchworth State Park this morning. The men’s team finished 13th among 18 teams and the women’s squad was 11th among 18 teams.
In the men’s race, senior John Zarella (Mahopac, NY) was the first Hawk to cross the finish line. He was 34th in a time of 27:45. Behind Zarella were senior Dan Holton (Rhinebeck, NY) who finished 72nd with a time of 28:35 and freshman Matt McLean (Oswego, NY) who was 94th with a time of 29:01. Juniors Jason Letts (Plattsburgh, NY) and Sam Austin (Northport, NY) rounded out the top five finishers for the Hawks. Letts finished in 123rd place with a time of 29:47 while Austin’s time of 30:15 placed him 138th.
Geneseo won the meet with 23 points behind a first place finish by Ted Turner (25:30). New Paltz finished with 331 points.
Sophomore Janet Walsh (Baldwinsville, NY) paced the women s team with her 31st place finish and a time of 25:12. Sophomore Heather DeBuono (Fishkill, NY) was the second Hawk to cross the finish line. She was 53rd with a time of 25:34. Freshman Alida Van Almelo (Groton, NY) came in 58th with a time of 25:40. Sophomore Kate Choromanski (Shelton, CT) and freshman Kelly Dunphy (Hauppauge, NY) completed the Hawks top five finishers. Choromanski finished in 70th place in a time of 26:00 while Dunphy’s time of 26:27 placed her 86th.
Geneseo also captured the team title in the women’s race with 31 points. Oswego’s Susan McWilliams won the race in a time of 22:44. New Paltz finished with 254 points.
