Hawks Split With 10th Ranked Oneonta

NEW PALTZ, NY — The New Paltz Hawks and Oneonta Red Dragons spilt their season doubleheader this afternoon at Loren Campbell Field in New Paltz, NY. The Hawks took game one 13-9 before Oneonta took game two 10-5.

New Paltz trailed by four runs twice in the first game but used a 10-run explosion in the fifth to seal the win over the Red Dragons, who entered the game ranked 10th in the nation and #1 in New York State.

Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, freshman Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) crushed a three-run homerun over the leftfield wall to pull the Hawks within two runs. In the fifth, the Hawks scored 10 runs and pounded out ten hits, including Silvester Castro’s (New York, NY) three-run blast to take a 13-8 lead. Oneonta managed one more run in the top of the seventh for the final 13-9 margin. McAdams and Castro combined for nine RBIs in the game, and Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) rapped out three hits.

Rocco Grassi (Endicott, NY) drove in three runs and Rob Bernstein (Staten Island, NY) had two hits to lead the Red Dragons in game one.

In game two, Bernstein and Jamie Wright (Ithaca, NY) each drove in three runs to lead the Red Dragons to a 10-5 win. Dan Gamache (Poughkeepsie, NY) went eight innings on the mound with 10 strikeouts to remain perfect on the season at 3-0. Wright, Jesse Torchia (LaGrangeville, NY), and Jason Corbin (Miiller Place, NY) each had two hits.

The Hawks were led by Tom Bigler (Brewster, NY) and Randy Walters (Collierville, TN) who had three hits apiece.
