A hole-in-one for student success: 2025 Doug Sheppard Classic raises record funds

The 2025 Doug Sheppard Classic on June 9 at the Powelton Club in Newburgh, New York teed up record-breaking support for SUNY New Paltz students, generating a total of $81,000 raised by more than 120 participants and sponsors including New Paltz community members, local businesspeople and Friends of the University.

“Our players and sponsors made this outstanding tournament possible,” said Lisa Sandick, program director for special events and sponsorships at SUNY New Paltz. “Their support opens doors to meaningful learning opportunities, helping every New Paltz student realize their potential and enrich their academic experience.”

“The Shep” is held annually in support of the SUNY New Paltz Foundation, which helps students in need of financial assistance to continue their university studies. The Foundation also supports public events including the SUNY New Paltz Distinguished Speaker Series and University traditions such as New Student Convocation, Commencement and Alumni Reunion.

In addition to raising record funds, this year’s tournament also honored Sean Mulloy, retail operations manager for higher education retailer Follett Book Company and former manager of the University’s Campus Bookstore. He was celebrated for his continued service to the campus community as a member of the SUNY New Paltz Golf Tournament Committee for 12 years.

The tournament is named in memory of longtime professor, administrator and coach Doug “Shep” Sheppard, who passed away in 2008. Sheppard was the University’s golf coach for 32 years, and he was a frequent, welcome presence at local golf courses and tournaments.

The 2025 Doug Sheppard Classic Golf Tournament was made possible by the SUNY New Paltz Foundation, with thanks to presenting sponsor Sodexo; Eagle sponsors Carrier and Campus Auxiliary Services; Birdie sponsors Architecture+, Consigli, Herff Jones, International Brotherhood of Electric Workers Local Union 363, LaBella, Laborers Local 17, New York State Laborers, The New Paltz Bookstore, Ira Schreck ’74 and Barbara Ginsberg and Timely Signs; and Birdie & Beverage sponsor Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages.
