SUNY New Paltz hosts 25th annual Mid-Hudson American Chemical Society Undergraduate Research Symposium

The SUNY New Paltz Department of Chemistry will host the 25th annual Mid-Hudson American Chemical Society’s Undergraduate Research Symposium on Friday, April 25 from 4-7 p.m., where 12 student-faculty teams from New Paltz’s School of Science & Engineering will present original scholarship during a poster session in Coykendall Science Building, amongst more than 50 presentations from local colleges and universities.
New Paltz projects will focus on a variety of topical areas, including the synthesis of new compounds that may be candidates for antibiotics or have antimicrobial potential and the efficacy of using natural products (for example, tree bark) as insecticides.
“The Symposium provides a valuable experience as students learn how to present their findings to others in similar fields,” said Chemistry Professor Pamela St. John. “Students will also have the opportunity to learn about the research that takes place at the other campuses, which will also be valuable to their study of chemistry.”
Students will also be welcomed to the insights of Karena Chapman, a Stony Brook University chemistry scholar who will serve as the annual event’s guest speaker, sharing her research on new, sustainable ways of energy storage.
