CSS in the AWC: Center for Student Success expands access for students with new satellite location in the Athletic & Wellness Center
Students at SUNY New Paltz looking for academic support now have another place they can go.
New Paltz’s Center for Student Success has expanded from its original Old Main Building hub, adding a new satellite location at the Athletic & Wellness Center (AWC) and increasing its capacity to provide supports including tutoring and writing help for students.
“We envisioned a goal where we could have more than one location for students to access our services,” said Center for Student Success Director Kristen Fanfarelli. “Having all that is needed be available in closer proximity for our students presents a greater advantage towards their academic success.”
Since the new location opened in the AWC, attendance has increased by 53.2% for all CSS services from the previous academic year.
“From what we’ve seen, the students find this new environment to be helpful, which is a testament to the benefits of having multiple locations,” said Fanfarelli.
Students and peer tutors alike have felt the impact of having an additional outlet for critical and beneficial academic support since the satellite location opened. The new location is especially valuable for students who live in southern residence halls like Ridgeview, Esopus and Lenape, who now can save a walk across campus and instead get CSS services much closer to home.
“Students are often pressed for time, so having another location that’s closer to some of the residence halls helps them manage their day-to-day effectively,” said alumna Monica Ilieva ’24 (Psychology), who served one of the Center for Student Success satellite location’s first peer tutors.
