“‘Reverse Engineering’ Chinese Government Information Controls”: A Distinguished Speaker Series event with Gary King ’80 ’10 HON, Oct. 15

The SUNY New Paltz Distinguished Speaker Series is proud to welcome the Director of the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University Gary King ’80 ’10 HON for a timely talk on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024.

The event, titled “‘Reverse’ Engineering Chinese Government Information Controls,” will be held in the Lecture Center at 7 p.m. and concludes with a meet and greet as well as refreshments.

Tickets for this event can be reserved via this link. General admission is free with a $10 suggested donation to the SUNY New Paltz Foundation, which supports future educational programs for our students.

King’s talk will focus on how he and his students worked to navigate the issue of social media censorship in China. Together, they embarked on a massive effort to download all posts in the region before the government could find them, then learned about what kinds of posts the government is likely to control.

The Harvard professor is widely recognized for expertise developing and applying empirical methods in many areas of social science, focusing on innovations that span the range from statistical theory to practical application.

His appearance as this fall’s Distinguished Speaker continues an extensive record of engagement with his alma mater. King is the namesake of The Benjamin Center’s Gary King Visiting Lecturer in Applied Social Research series, an annual event made possible through philanthropy. He had previously addressed SUNY New Paltz graduates as 2010 Commencement speaker. Read more here about Gary King.
