Campus H: Drive will be retired on March 14, 2022, and other winter news from ITS
The shared Campus Drive for file storage, also known as the H: Drive, will be retired on March 14, 2022, as Information Technology Services (ITS) continues to move toward cloud-based file storage as a best practice for modernizing and securing our file storage infrastructure.
With more people needing access to their files remotely, and the challenges associated with VPN-based file shares, moving files into the cloud presents easier access to campus files.
Moving away from a large shared drive also offers security benefits. ITS has discovered cases where faculty and staff have placed files with sensitive data on the Campus Drive, effectively exposing them to all. With the increasing use of OneDrive, Teams and SharePoint, more outdated and less secure shared space for file storage is no longer necessary or practical.
If you currently use the H: Drive for inter-departmental work or communication, please use this link to connect with ITS as soon as possible, so we can help you create an alternative method to accomplish your goals.
Here are some news updates about campus technology as we head into the winter break:
Prepare for Possible Network Outages on Tuesday, Jan. 11
The campus firewall, which help keep campus systems secure, will be replaced on Tuesday, Jan. 11. We anticipate several campus-wide network outages during the cutover, which may take several hours that day.
Software Updates to Your Campus Computer
Desktop Support intends to use the winter break to perform software upgrades and security updates for office computers.
This includes upgrades to Windows 10, Microsoft Office 365, all supported browsers, and other software supported by ITS.
You do not need to unplug or power off your office computers, which typically enter a power saving sleep mode after 20 minutes of inactivity.
Desktop Support will begin replacing outdated computers during the winter break. We would strongly encourage users to move their work files to OneDrive or SharePoint.
Please refer to the Daily Digest email newsletter for information about upcoming training sessions for OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams provided by the Office of Human Resources, diversity & Inclusion.
Audio/Video Technology Upgrade in Lecture Center 100
Instructional Media Services will be upgrading the technology in LC 100 this winter. The upgrades will include a new instructor station podium, monitors, document camera, Crestron touch panel, audience camera and microphone system.
Knowmia to Panopto Migration Will Complete on Jan. 31, 2022
As previously announced, Panopto is now the official campus media platform. Our previous platform, Knowmia, will be officially discontinued on Jan. 31, 2022.
Knowmia videos can still be used in winter 2022 Blackboard courses, but all Knowmia links in spring 2022 courses must be changed to Panopto links before the first day of classes on Jan. 24.
If you are new to Panopto, please review this Panopto Basics Training video for an introduction and additional resources.
Faculty: Remember to Check Your Classroom Technology for Spring!
Teaching faculty can confirm classroom technology by room in advance of holding class for the first time.
Please refer to this Knowledge Base article for more information.
You can also use this tool to search technology by classroom location.
Restricting Macros in Microsoft Office
Macros, which allow users to program a series of commands to be executed at once, continue to be used as a vehicle for spreading ransomware in more and more security incidents, especially using Microsoft Office utilities.
ITS is responding to this growing threat by restricting the use of macros across the campus network.
If you use macros in your day-to-day work, please use this link to place a request for continued access.
