Education and dialogue on the violence at the U.S. Capitol, Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m.
SUNY New Paltz is pleased to welcome Brian Jones, Ph.D., to lead a conversation with our campus community about last week’s violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The event will take place via Zoom on Thursday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m., and is open to all members of our community. Use this link to join the event when it is live, or see below for the meeting ID and passcode.
The goals of this conversation, scheduled intentionally to happen before the start of classes, will be to help our community make sense of the events of Jan. 6 in an educational context, and also to pave the way for further action and discussion toward our institutional commitment to become an anti-racist campus.
The event is co-sponsored by the Student Association, the Office of Human Resources, Diversity & Inclusion, United University Professions, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Black Lives Matter at School Collective.
Brian Jones (Ph.D. ’18, Urban Education, CUNY Graduate Center) is a scholar and activist who currently serves as associate director of education at the Schomburg Center for Black Culture, a nearly 100-year-old research library that is part of the New York Public Library.
His most recent publication is “Black Lives Matter at School: Some Historical Perspectives,” which appears as a chapter in the new book Black Live Matter at School: An Uprising for Educational Justice.
Jones is working on turning his dissertation, which focuses on a 1960s student uprising at the Tuskegee Institute, into a book to be published by New York University Press.
