Gwen Havranek retiring after distinguished, four-decade career at SUNY New Paltz
Gwen Havranek, director of business operations in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, has announced her decision to retire on June 30, after a career spanning nearly four decades at SUNY New Paltz.
Havranek is a 2012 SUNY Chancellor’s Award winner for Excellence in Professional Service whose time at the College has included roles in Administrative Affairs, Student Affairs, and, most recently, more than 20 years in the Office of the Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
She has demonstrated strong leadership and strategic thinking, particularly during challenging budgetary times, and has proven effective at sustaining integral academic programs while finding creative ways to make them operate more efficiently. Colleagues know her as a “go-to” person within her department, which has positioned her well to serve as a liaison between the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and other campus units.
“It has been my privilege to work with Gwen for the past six years, during which time I’ve learned quite a bit about the history of the institution,” said Dean Laura Barrett. “Gwen has been one of the most conscientious colleagues I’ve ever known, thinking creatively and innovatively about ways to make the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and SUNY New Paltz better. I know, however, that what she most enjoyed was helping faculty figure out how to run the special events that make our campus the vibrant place that it is. While I am sad to see Gwen leave, she has served the College remarkably in her 40 years on campus and deserves a retirement free of the stresses of budget management.”
The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences has announced that Staff Assistant Despina Williams Parker will assume the role of director of budget operations effective June 1.
