College mourns passing of Barry Bort, long-tenured professor of English
It is with sadness that the College shares the news of the passing of Professor Barry Bort on Aug. 28, 2016, at the age of 83.
Bort joined SUNY New Paltz as an English instructor in 1965 and stayed for more than 40 years, specializing in courses focused on Victorian Literature and film before his retirement in 2007. He held a Ph.D. in English Literature from Brown University.
A student of nature, Bort was a frequent trail-hiker in the Shawangunk Mountains and the mid-Hudson Valley, and shared this passion with students during summer backpacking trips that were a regular part of his nature literature courses.
A memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at the Slingerland Pavilion, Mohonk Preserve, New Paltz N.Y. The venue is handicap accessible.
Bort is survived by his partner Victoria Hazel and his children Peter, Sandra, Stephen and Nicholas.
