18th annual Doug Sheppard Classic brings alumni, golfers together and raises dollars for students and programs
David Grant ’70 (Anthropology) has played in the annual Doug Sheppard Classic SUNY New Paltz Golf Tournament every year since his beloved coach, the event’s namesake, passed away in 2008.
“I first attended the event to honor Coach,” said Grant. “But I’ve returned each year to reconnect with other alumni and the College. We have many fond memories of Shep and this event helps keep his memory alive.”
Grant remembers his time on the golf team fondly – two years filled with proud wins and plenty of pranks. He also credits Sheppard with helping him improve his game.
“I was a scrambler before he made a complete change in my grip,” said Grant. “There’s no way I’d still be playing the way I used to. I owe each swing to him.”
Alumni, employees, and community members eager to support the College originally inspired the annual tournament and have continued to drive players to the Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston, N.Y., each year.
“The Shep,” as the event is known, supports the Fund for New Paltz, which supports a wide range of opportunities for students.
This year’s tournament raised more than $65,000 after expenses.
“It’s nice to have the connection with New Paltz and to know that what we do makes a difference for students,” said Grant. “It’s a beautiful, private course and I know Shep would be proud.”
About the Doug Sheppard Classic
The tournament is named in memory of longtime professor, administrator and coach Doug Sheppard, who died in 2008. Shep, as many knew him, was New Paltz’s golf coach for 32 years and an avid player, a familiar fixture at local golf courses and tournaments.
