Tony Bonilla ’87 ’05g celebrates the Hawks NCAA win and son Anthony’s contributions to the team
For the first time in program history, the top-ranked New Paltz men’s volleyball team has captured the NCAA Division III Tournament title, defeating No. 2 Springfield College in the championship match on Sunday, April 24, in Rochester, N.Y.
The win also marks the first NCAA title for any New Paltz team.
“They deserve this. They worked hard and it was our dream to be national champions,” said head coach Radu Petrus. “I think this is huge because this is the first time that the university and the department have this trophy.”
For one New Paltz family, the NCAA victory is a household affair. As assistant coach and former player for the Hawks, Tony Bonilla ’87 (Spanish) ’05g (Professional Studies) celebrated with his son Anthony Bonilla ’17 (Computer Science), who helped the Hawks earn the monumental win at Nazareth College’s Kidera Gymnasium.
“It is unbelievably rewarding to see where this program is now,” said Bonilla, who serves as director of the Educational Opportunity Program at the College. “And being able to share this experience with the Hawks, but also with my son, is truly incredible.”
Bonilla has worked with the volleyball program for the last 25 years and continues to serve as an assistant coach for the men’s team, where his son proudly represents both the College and his hometown of New Paltz.
“This win is for the whole community,” said Anthony. “It feels surreal.”
The Hawks conclude the 2016 season with a 33-2 overall record and a 30-0 mark against Division III teams.
