Alicia Hyndman ’93 inaugurated as New York State Assemblywoman for District 29 in Queens
SUNY New Paltz alumna Alicia Hyndman ’93 (Black Studies) was elected in Nov. 2015 as New York State Assemblywoman for District 29 in Queens and was inaugurated on Jan. 10, 2016 to a two-year term.
Hyndman represents the neighborhoods of Laurelton, Rosedale, St. Albans, Addisleigh Park, Hollis, Springfield Gardens and Jamaica. She is the daughter of Caribbean immigrants and came to the United States from London, England, as a young child.
The alumna’s professional career spans more than 15 years with the NYS Department of Education, where she has held varied positions. Prior to being elected to the state Legislature, Hyndman was an active member of Community Boards 12Q, and 13Q, and served as a member of the Boards Education Committees, and also as a regular participant of the Rosedale Civic Association. According to the New York State Assembly website, Hyndman served on the NYC Department of Education’s Community District Education Council 29 (CEC 29) for 10 years, the last four years as president. She led the advocacy for the 36 elementary and middle schools in the district, and through collaborative leadership was able to bring in $30 million in capital funding for upgrades to enhance the quality of education for students.
In addition to a bachelor’s degree in Black Studies from New Paltz, Hyndman has a master’s degree in public administration from Framingham State College in Massachusetts. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and currently resides in Rosedale, Queens.
