Late Jumper Sinks Hawks
OSWEGO, NY- Oswego’s Rachel Kohrs scored 11 points in the game, but her jumper with 29 seconds remaining in the game gave the Lakers the 45-43 win over the Hawks Tuesday night in the Max Ziel Gymnasium on the campus of Oswego State. The Hawks forced 27 turnovers on the night and three Lakers committed at least six turnovers in the game.
Despite out rebounding the Lakers, 27-13 and 14-2 in offensive rebounds in the second half the Hawks could not overcome a cold shooting night. The Hawks trailed 41-38 with three minutes, 25 seconds to go and a three-pointer by Farrell tied the game with two minutes, 39 seconds to go. After a foul by the Hawks, McCready hit both of her free throws to put the Lakers back up by two with two minutes, 23 seconds remaining. Minehan tied the game 40 seconds later on lay-up, which lead to the Kohrs game-winner.
Maggie Farrell led the Hawks with 10 points, eight rebounds and a game-high five steals. Nicole Sarcone, Carly Minehan and Kaitlin Clifford all netted six points respectively, including three assists and four steals by Clifford. Kristen Caban netted five points for the Hawks.
Colleen McCready led the Lakers with a game-high 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Kayla Ryan had six points and Diglio had five points and three assists for the Lakers, who improve to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the league.
The Lakers opened the game on a 6-2 run in the first three minutes of the contest. The Hawks cut the lead to the one at 6-5 but Oswego would use an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to take a seven point advantage with 12 minutes, 17 seconds left in the half. After a basket by Minehan and jumper by Kohrs, the Lakers still led by seven, 16-9 with nine minutes, 50 seconds to go. Over the next eight minutes, the Hawks would outscore the Lakers 19-8 to take a four point lead with just under two minutes to go. Farrell led the Hawks comeback with five points during the stretch and Caban and Sarcone each had four a piece. The Lakers Kristen Diglio made a lay-up with one minute, 12 seconds to go to make the half time score of 28-26 in favor of the Hawks. New Paltz outscored the Lakers 14-6 in the point and 15-7 in points of turnovers. The Hawks bench outplayed the Lakers in the half outscoring them, 13-6.
The Hawks fall to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the league and will return to the court on Friday, January 29 against Potsdam on the campus of SUNY Potsdam at 6 p.m.
