Hawks Pull-Away From Fredonia Late
NEW PALTZ, NY- Carly Minehan’s lay-up with five minutes, six seconds remaining in the game broke a 55-55 tie as the Hawks pulled away from the Fredonia for the 71-59 victory.The Hawks upped their record to 9-4 overall and 6-1 in the league.
Seniors Kristen Caban and Maggie Farrell led four Hawks in double-figure scorers with 16 points.Farrell finished 10-of-12 from the charity strip and senior Nicole Sarcone finished with a solid game with 12 points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists.Minehan added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Katie Landy and Merissa Gaeta each tallied 14 points a piece to lead the Blue Devils, and Gaeta added 11 rebounds to her tally.Caroline Hourihan had eight points and Nicole Calbi had six points and four assists.The Blue Devils fall to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.
The second half featured the same as the first half.Seven lead changes and seven ties.The Hawks scored the first four points of the half, but only to see the Blue Devils score six straight to take a 44-40 lead with 16 minutes, 36 seconds remaining.The Hawks held a 46-35 rebounding margin and 22-10 in offensive rebounds.The Hawks outscored Fredonia 13-4 on second chance points in the game.
Merissa Gaeta blocked Maliqua Fisher’s lay-up with 0.2 second remaining in the first half to preserve a 38-36 lead for the Blue Devils.The Blue Devils jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first minute, but the Hawks responded by scoring the next five points to take an 8-6 lead.The Hawks trailed 36-31 with just under two minutes left and finished the half scoring five of the last seven points.The first half featured 15 lead changes and eight ties.Fredonia’s bench outscored the Hawks bench 12-6, but the Hawks held a 9-2 advantage in second chance points.
