Women Fall In Final Relay, Men Strong against Coast Guard
NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming team fell to the Coast Guard, Saturday afternoon. The women’s meet came down to the final 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, where Coast Guard won and defeated the Hawks 136-126. The men fell 167-92 to the Bears.
On the women’s side, Jessica Lester set a school record in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 10:55.36 to finish first in the event. The relay team of Yuka Suzuka, Becky Baker, Kate Genovese and Allison Wells won the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:53.78, six second faster then the Bears relay team.
In the 200 Yard Freestyle, Marissa Morris finished second with a time of 1:59.89. Suzuka finished second in the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:02.15 just a second behind the Bears Elizabeth Kenis.
Baker and Katina Lown finished one and two in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Baker won with a time of 1:10.16 and Lown touched in at 1:14.39.
Amanda Cloer had a strong race in the 200 Yard Butterfly, finishing second with a time of 1:48.51. Morris finished second in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 55.89, just .85 behind Heidi Gayman.
Baker won the 200 Yard Breaststroke in 2:36.07 and Lester finished second in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 5:25.26. Genovese won the 100 Yard Butterfly in 1:04.37 and Suzuka won the 200 Yard IM in 2:17.55.
On the men’s side, the relay team of Steve Cozzolongo, Rob Webb, Keith MacDonald and Billy Papetti finished second in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:40.16. In the 50 Yard Freestyle, Papetti finished second followed by Pat Rathbun in third and Matt Demerest in fourth.
